Yes. Both games are free to play for anyone - you don't even have to register. However, tracking your scores and competing with friends requires joining a squad.

Each puzzle presents a quote with the letters scrambled. Unscramble the letters to reveal the quote. You can use context clues (Who said it, When, Where) and up to 3 letter hints to help solve the puzzle. Try to complete it in the fewest moves and fastest time!

Each day has a theme: Sports Sunday, Movie Monday, TV Tuesday, Wildcard Wednesday, Throwback Thursday (historical quotes 100+ years old), Freaky Friday (horror/spooky), and Satire Saturday (political satire and commentary).

You have access to context clues (Who, When, Where) that provide information about the quote. You also get up to 3 letter hints per puzzle that reveal a random unrevealed letter.

How is my Scuotes score calculated?

Your score is based on time to complete and number of moves (letter guesses). Fewer moves and faster times result in better rankings on the leaderboard.

How do I play Letterbox?

Select a letter from the bank and click a column to drop it. Letters fall to the lowest available cell. Form valid words in all rows and columns to complete the puzzle.

How does Letterbox difficulty work?

Difficulty increases through the week: Monday-Wednesday are easy (3x3 grids), Thursday-Friday are medium (3x4 grids), and Saturday-Sunday are hard (4x4 grids). Harder puzzles have more starting time.

How is my Letterbox score calculated?

You earn points for each valid word (10 points for 3-letter words, 15 for 4-letter words). A perfect grid (all valid words) earns a 20-point bonus. Your remaining time is added as bonus points.

A Squad is a private group where you can compete with friends, family, or colleagues on a private leaderboard. Being a squad member also allows you to message other squad members for a little friendly trash talk or the like. Squad creators sponsor members and manage the group.

Sign in to your account, go to the Squads page, and click 'Create Squad'. You'll choose a name, description, and number of member slots. You can also invite members by email during creation.

How much does a Squad cost?

New squads start with a 30-day free trial! After the trial, pricing is based on the number of invited members (you as the founder are free). Pricing tiers: 1-5 members at $3/year each, 6-10 at $2.75/year each, 11-20 at $2.50/year each, and 21+ at $2/year each.

Can I add more members later?

Yes! Squad owners can add more member slots at any time up to a maximum of 50 total members. The pricing for additional slots follows the same tier structure based on how many slots you're adding. It's a little cheaper if you start with a couple extra spaces to add more friends later.

How do I invite someone to my Squad?

As a Squad owner, go to your Squad page and click the invite button. Enter the email address of the person you want to invite. They'll receive an email with a link to join your Squad.

Can I leave a Squad?

Yes, you can leave a Squad at any time from the Squad detail page. If you're the Squad owner, you can transfer ownership to another member before leaving.

What happens after the free trial?

After your 30-day trial ends, you'll need to subscribe to keep your squad active. You'll receive notifications before the trial expires. If no payment is made, squad features will be deactivated, but you can reactivate at any time by completing payment.

Can I get another free trial?

Each user is eligible for one free trial. Once you've been a member of a trial squad, any new squads you create will require immediate payment. This ensures fair access for everyone.

Can I play previous days' puzzles?

Squad members can access previous puzzles using the calendar feature in Scuotes. Non-squad users can only play today's puzzle. Your completions are tracked separately for each day.

What happens if I give up on a puzzle?

In Scuotes, if you give up, the answer is revealed but you won't receive a completion score for that day. In Letterbox, the game ends when time runs out or the grid is full.

How does the leaderboard work?

The global leaderboard shows Squad members ranked by their puzzle completion times and moves. You must be a member of a Squad to appear on the global leaderboard. Squad members can also view a private Squad leaderboard showing only their Squad members' rankings.

The daily leaderboard shows rankings for each day's puzzle. Historical rankings are preserved so you can see how you performed on any past day.

Can others see my scores?

If you are a Squad member, your username and scores appear on the global leaderboard visible to other authenticated users. Within your Squad, members can see each other's detailed statistics and rankings. Players not in a Squad do not appear on any leaderboard.
